BENDAKAYA PAPPUCHARU[okra lentil stew]


Compare to sambar I think this is very delicious and easy to make no need to add any sambar powder.This is a tamarind based lentil stew cooked with lots of vegetables Not only okra you can add many different vegetables like bottle gourd ,drumstick,eggplant,radish,carrot,pumpkin.You can mix any 2-3 vegetables or only with one also you can make this but each vegetable gives there own taste.
INGRDIENTS:-
1/2cup--toor dal[kandi pappu,split pigeon pea]
1medium sized--onion
1medium sized--tomato
1/2kg--okra[bendakaya]-cut in to 1inch cubes
4-green chillis-slit
50 gms-tamarind[a small lemon size]
1/2tesp--red chilli powder
1/4tesp--turmeric powder
salt to taste
afew curry leaves
a few coriender leaves
a pinch of asafoitida
1/2tesp--mustard seeds
1/2tesp-cumin seeds
METHOD:-
1.Cook toor dal in water till soft mash and keep a side[you can cook dal in pressure cooker also]
2. Slice onions and tomatos and keep a side
3.Soak tamarind in water and extract juice in 1 cup water and keep a side.
4.heat 2tesps oil in a pan add onions[sliced] and fry till soft then add tomatos fry for 2 mins now add okra peaces and add salt and let it cook till okra cooked
5.now add tamarind juice and red chilli powder ,turmeric powder mix one time let it cook till raw smell of tamarind disappears.Let it boil for 10-15mins.
now add cook and mashed toor dal mix well and bring to a boil.and remove from heat.
7.Heat oil in a pan add mustard let it popup then add cumin seeds,asafoetida and add this to dal and tamarind mixture mix and cover and leave for 10-15 mins then serve,serve with plain rice and papad.That will be a full meal for the day.

Your Okra Lentil Stew looks very interesting. I had never heard of this before. I will definitely give it a try since okra is my favourite vegetable. Thanks for sharing :)
